A resident from Uthiru in Nairobi County near a building that collapsed has revealed the agony of waiting for emergency personnel for hours after the building started to sink.
While sharing the complaint online, the resident noted that the building next to IRLI started to sink with about 34 people trapped inside at around 7 pm on Tuesday, May 7.
The resident noted that no help was in the near sight until about 9.20 pm.
"We urgently need help, at Uthiru next to IRLI. A house is sinking and people have been trapped inside since 7 pm no help till now," the resident stated.
As the tenants awaited help, some of them jumped through the window before the building was destroyed. In one of the houses, a fire had begun but it burnt out without spreading to other houses.
Four people including three children and a nanny were reported missing. Luckily no casualties were reported from the accident.
After the outcry, several emergency teams led by the Kenya Red Cross rushed to the scene to rescue the tenants and also offer first aid to anyone injured.
A statement from Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja revealed that the county emergency team was at the scene with assistance from locals.
He added that the four missing individuals had been found and all 34 residents could be accounted for.
The late-night statement explained that the county team was waiting for the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) from Kahawa Barracks to bring sniffer dogs and ensure no one was still trapped in the debris.
"The Nairobi City County Government is providing immediate humanitarian aid for the night and plans to provide further support and facilitate reintegration," read part of the statement.
On the other hand, the Kenya Red Cross revealed that one of the female tenants was taken to hospital by good well-wishers while others with minor injuries were being treated at the scene by the Red Cross Action team.
