The Ministry of Interior issued an update on Monday's terrorist attack which occurred in Elwak, Mandera County.
In a statement, the Ministry confirmed that 5 other people were nursing serious injuries sustained from the attack while 5 others lost their lives.
Further, the government requested Kenyans who may have had information on the morning attack to furnish the authorities with the same to enable the police mount investigations.
Additionally, the ministry warned criminal elements of taking advantage of the government’s attention on flood mitigation measures to undertake illegal activities.
“The Public is requested to assist law enforcement agencies with information to ensure the complete rollback against criminal elements who may take advantage of the prevailing stormy weather and disaster mitigation efforts to compromise our National Security,” read the communique in part.
However, the government confirmed that the crime scene had been sealed off for evacuation and investigations while various security formations were in pursuit of the attackers.
The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was planted in Elwak's Central Business District just near the Administrative Police (AP) post.
Reportedly, the bomb planted by the criminals was saddled on a donkey cart to avoid detection.
Following the attack, business activities were disrupted in the area prompting the closure of many establishments and the evacuation of members of staff for businesses in the region.
"We regret to inform you, that our Elwak Branch, Mandera County will remain closed today following an explosion in Elwak Town," one of the banks reported.
The Monday attack compounds recent terrorist attacks in the northern frontier of the country.
On March 9, a vehicle transporting Kenya Defence Forces soldiers was ambushed, injuring nine of them in Garissa.
Similarly on January 18, another IED saddled on a donkey exploded killing two police officers in the Ina Bari area of Mandera County.
