Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Monday, May 6 appealed for help from Kenyans and the international community as the national government continues to put in place strategies to mitigate the devastating effects of the ongoing floods.
Speaking at his Karen residence at the Floods Steering Committee Meeting attended by various governors, the country's second in command announced the different channels that well-wishers could use to channel their donations.
During the meeting, all development partners were urged to channel their support through the National Treasury.
Additionally, private-sector well-wishers are asked to liaise with the National Drought Response Team led by Safaricom Chief Executive Peter Ndegwa.
Any wellwisher with donations such as food items, care packages, and medical perks is invited to the National Disaster Operation Center at Nyayo House. The donations will be in designated warehouses across the country for ease of distribution.
"The private sector and well-wishers are therefore invited to send cash donations to the national drought mitigation appeal fund. We shall be releasing the account details in foreign and Kenyan currency," he stated.
Gachagua further asked well-wishers who want to make their donations directly to affected Kenyans to inform the relevant authorities on the type of donation, number of recipients and area to be distributed.
Well-wishers were informed that distributions should only be done in the presence and coordination of the relevant County Commissioners or representatives
He revealed that the Auditor General will be tasked with ensuring accountability, transparency and also integrity in the distribution. A report shall be issued after the final audit.
His appeal comes hours after the European Union donated Ksh72.2 million to Kenya to help deal with the devastating effects of floods countrywide.
The government is also offering help to those affected by the heavy rains by distributing food and non-food items as well as migrating them to safer areas. The government is also expected to offer Ksh10,000 to Kenyans affected by floods after President William Ruto's promise.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta last week vowed to donate Ksh2 million to the Kenya Red Cross to facilitate the rescue of Kenyans affected by floods.
