It's been five months since the murder of 20-year-old Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) student Rita Waeni came to light, with the family questioning why the main suspect is still at large.

In a feature titled Crimes Untold by investigative journalist Franklin Wallah, Waeni's family explained that they were yet to receive updates from the detectives investigating the case since the release of two Nigerian suspects in February.

According to her mother, Rita Waeni painted a picture of a high-end person whom she had been conversing with and promised to introduce her to the individual.

"I knew the person and he was C.M. (name withheld) but the platform or the conversation they were doing I didn't know at the time," she stated.

"I knew the person and he was C.M. (name withheld) but the platform or the conversation they were doing I didn't know at the time," she stated.

In her final conversation, Waeni spoke to her aunt indicating that she would meet with the man for dinner at a public mall along Thika Road.

"I left her in the house at 3:30 pm. That's when she sent her a text saying that she was going to meet the man. I called her mother," the aunt remarked.

The mother explained that her daughter deemed it necessary to meet with the suspect for he claimed to be flying out of the country on Sunday, January 14, a day after the incident.

"We talked and she told me that she was meeting with her friend who was leaving the country and they were to have an early dinner and after that, we never talked again," she noted.

Waeni left in the afternoon at their home in Syokimau to the destination along Roysambu.

Conversations between Waeni and the suspect revealed that the victim sought to postpone the meeting for various reasons but was, however, convinced by the individual to proceed with the meetup.

CCTV footage captured the JKUAT student and the suspect walking towards the short-stay apartment that they had rented for the night.

A video recording captured by Waeni on the fateful night showed the living room of the apartment, with drinks on the table and music playing in the background. She, however, did not capture the suspect's face.

Waeni's father indicated that he had a conversation with Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin who had promised that they possessed the expertise to trace and capture the perpetrator.

"I draw my appeal to DCI boss, Inspector General and my president who is the ultimate authority. If he got to know about this matter, then action would be taken," Waeni's father noted.
