Police have arrested ten suspects in connection with a violent attack on Emakale Police Post in Matungu Sub-County, Kakamega County.

According to a police report, the arrests follow an incident in which a group stormed the police post, raided an officer’s house, and destroyed public documents along with personal property.

A joint operation conducted on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, by officers from Matungu Police Station and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) resulted in the apprehension of the suspects.

The National Police Service has warned that violence targeting police officers and facilities will not be condoned. It cautioned that anyone found interfering with officers on duty or damaging government property will face swift action.

The Service reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, urging members of the public to resolve grievances through lawful channels rather than resorting to violence.

Meanwhile, the ten are currently in custody and will be arraigned in court.

The incident comes at a time when the rise of gang elements who often resort to taking the law into their own hands has been on the increase in recent weeks.

In the neighbouring Butere on Monday, police were forced to fire several rounds in the air to scare away a gang of thieves who had attacked them during a security operation.

According to police reports, the gang accosted the officers using blunt objects and pangas with the intent to cause bodily harm.

However, the officers’ quick response de-escalated the situation, forcing the gang to flee. Investigations are currently underway to track down the suspects.

Over 370 kilometres away in Nairobi, there have been reports of criminal gangs exploiting poorly lit areas in the central business district to mug and rob unsuspecting members of the public.

On Monday, the Nairobi County Government announced a crackdown within the CBD after the discovery of unlawful electricity distribution hubs believed to be aiding gangs in their operations.

During a joint operation involving the Nairobi County Government, Kenya Power, and the National Police Service, an unlawful power station was flagged and dismantled.
