Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has declared that the government will prosecute all those accused of hate mongering as the presidential election approaches.

Matiang'i issued the statement on Monday evening a few hours after Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria and former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama were arrested.

The CS further declared that the government would take the necessary action against such individuals irrespective of their political affiliation.

Kuria was earlier in the day apprehended over hate remarks and taken for questioning at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu road in Nairobi.

A few minutes later, Muthama was also arrested at his home in Kangundo and taken to the DCI offices for interrogation.

The two were later moved to Pangani Police Station where they are expected to be detained before being arraigned in court on Tuesday.

The leaders have been visited by among others NASA leader Raila Odinga, Siaya Senator James Orengo, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris.

National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) chairman Francis Ole Kaparo had earlier on stated that he was investigating the Gatundu South MP and 277 other individuals for incitement and hate speech.

Mr Kaparo affirmed that if found culpable, Kuria would be prosecuted as directed in the NCIC Act.
