Miguna Miguna Deported

Vocal Nairobi lawyer Miguna Miguna was on Tuesday night deported to Canada following a High Court order to have the Opposition politician released from police custody.

His lawyer, Dr John Khaminwa, confirmed that the lawyer was placed on a KLM flight departing from Nairobi to Amsterdam a few minutes to 10 p.m.

Official government communication through a Twitter handle conveyed: "Miguna is headed home. The court ordered he gets released and the Ministry of Interior obeyed the orders and even assisted him with a flight ticket home.

"Please note he renewed his Canadian Passport on June 16, 2017," Government's Nexus handle tweeted.

National Super Alliance (NASA) lawyers conveyed the news with gall, protesting that the action was drastic and uncalled for.

"We are reliably informed that Miguna Miguna has been forced into a KLM flight for 'deportation' to Canada. Now, how do you deport a Kenyan? This Country has been overrun by criminals," lawyer Nelson Havi tweeted in response.

A government source that spoke to Nation revealed that the Canadian government wrote to President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration expressing concerns over the alleged harassment of its citizen.

The source added that the Canadian administration had requested to have the harassed citizen back.

The Ministry of Interior is expected to give a detailed statement on Wednesday that will clarify on what grounds Miguna, a Kenyan citizen by birth, was deported.

High Court Judge Luka Kimaru on Tuesday ordered the release of the self-proclaimed General following his five-day-long detention that caused some to fear him dead.

He is accused of treason after participating in the swearing-in of NASA leader Raila Odinga on January 30 as well as being part of the outlawed National Resistance Movement (NRM).
