ERC Warns of Scammers at ASK Nairobi International Show

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Wednesday put out a notice warning business people of an ongoing scam around the Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Nairobi Trade Fair.

The notice outlined that the scammers were fleecing unsuspecting citizens by asking for money in exchange for contracts.

"Our attention is drawn to reports that there are individuals or cartels who are soliciting for money from members of the public through false pretence and impersonation of the Commissions officers.

"The fraudsters are asking members of the public to send them money in order for them to assist the unsuspecting public in securing branding contracts for the ongoing Nairobi International Trade Fair," the alert read in part.

The commission went on to advise members of the public to conduct a thorough background check before engaging in such transactions.

"The Commission wishes to categorically state that it has not asked any individuals to supply branding materials relating to the Nairobi ASK show.

"Additionally, the Commission does not charge any money in order to award any contracts and any such correspondence is a fraud," the commission warned.

ERC offered a hotline through which members of the public can report incidences of suspected fraud advising them to report to police stations as well.

"Members of the public are also encouraged to report any suspected individuals who are illegally extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public to the police station nearest to them or through our hotline number 0708444000 or info@erc.go.ke," the notice read.

The Trade Fair began on October 1 and is expected to end on Sunday. President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to officially open it on Thursday.
