DCI Releases CCTV Footage of Suspected Latema Road Bomber

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), on Wednesday, released CCTV footage of the suspect believed to have detonated the bomb that exploded at Latema Road in January.

In the grainy clip, the man clad in a black tracksuit and sandals is seen walking along the street with a carton on one hand.

A different angle (presumably after dropping the package) shows the unidentified man with his hoodie on as he stands right below the Latema Road sign.

The detectives appealed to the public to come forward with information that would help identify the man.

The incident occurred in January when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off shortly after 7pm outside Odeon Cinema injuring two people.

Addressing journalists at the time, Nairobi Regional Police Commander Philip Ndolo stated that the suspected attacker had hired a cart to carry a small box from Latema Road to Kenya Cinema.

According to reports, when the two got to the Latema Road-Tom Mboya street junction, the suspect informed the cart-pusher, who was identified as Joseph Okinyi, that he had forgotten his identification card at an M-Pesa shop and requested to dash back and pick it.

While Okinyi was standing at the junction, the box that he was carrying exploded. He sustained minor injuries on his right hand during the incident.

A newspaper vendor who was nearby also sustained minor injuries on his right leg. The two were rushed to hospital and were later discharged.

Days later, there was another bomb scare after a metal box was found abandoned at Odeon Cinema.

Members of the public around the area suspected that the box could have contained explosives and called the police.
