4 IEBC Commissioners Now “Ready to Quit”

Four commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) have reportedly offered to leave office.

Reports suggest that commissioners Yusuf Nzibo, Albert Bwire, Kule Galma Godana and Abdullahi Sharawe wrote to President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday and offered to resign.

The four said they wanted to avoid being dragged through the process initiated by Parliament to remove them from office, the Nation reports.

It is also claimed that they have requested to be paid their whole term salaries.

However, Chairman Issack Hassan, Vice-Chairperson Lilian Mahiri-Zaja, Mr Thomas Letangule, Mr Muthoni Wangai and Mr Mohamed Alawi Hussun have opted to stay in office.

This comes after the Jubilee and CORD coalitions selected their teams to represent them in the electoral reform talks which could decide IEBC's fate.

The Opposition has been holding demonstrations demanding the reconstitution of the electoral body, asserting that it could not be trusted to hold free and fair elections.
