The announcement was made in a press release by the selection panel for the appointment of commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission on Saturday, June 12.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC received 700 applications when they advertised for the positions.

The four positions fell vacant after the resignation of commissioner Roselyne Akombe in 2017, former Vice-Chairperson Cornie Nkatha Maina and commissionersPaul Kurgat and Margaret Mwachanya in 2018.

Other high-profile Shortlisted candidates include former ambassador to Zimbabwe, Lucy Chelimo, former SRC Commissioner Sellestine Mbii-Kiuluku, Ex KNCHR Chairpersons, and DR. Rose Odede, a commissioner with the National land commission.

Shortlisted candidates have to provide clearances from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI, Higher Educations Loans Board (HELB), the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission(EACC) and any Credit Reference Bureau.

IEBC has also called for public participation as is required by the law.

“ Members of the public are invited to avail, in writing, by memoranda, any information of interest with respect to the suitability of any of the shortlisted applicants to serve as Member of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission,” the Commission said on Saturday.

Oral interviews will be held between July 7 and July 22 at the Kenya International Conference Centre.

The IEBC has only three commissioners: Chairman Wafula Chebukati, Prof. Abdi Guliye, and Moya Molu.

The commission conducted the signature verification process of signatures submitted to the commission by BBI endorsement teams in January 2021.

However, in a ruling made by the High Court judges, the court barred IEBC from conducting any electoral activities pertaining to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) as it did not meet the quorum required to conduct business as a commission.
