Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) Director-General Mohammed Badi has issued an ultimatum to Nairobi landlords to repaint their buildings or face a daily fine of Ksh1,500.
According to Badi, the landlords have a sixty-day period to comply with the order or face the penalties.
He noted that the directive is in accordance with the county by-laws and public health cap which requires property owners to repaint their buildings every two years.
Badi added that this would realize the ongoing beautification project within the city.
"Any person who is guilty of an offence under, or convention of, or default in complying with, any provision of these Rules shall be liable to a fine not exceeding Ksh1,500 for every day during which the contravention continues," the Public Health Act Cap 242 reads.
The NMS boss pointed out that he had given the landlords a one-year grace period after they lamented on heavy losses incurred on their businesses due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Further, Badi pointed out that all government buildings have been repainted after the ministry was tasked to comply with the order.
"On the private sector, we involved Kenya Private Sector Alliance (Kepsa) and there were positive feedback from them and many repainted their buildings," he affirmed.
Initially, the NMS boss had called upon Nairobi residents and landlords to partner with the Service in a bid to implement various projects aimed at enhancing the aesthetic conditions of various streets, building frontages, and pavements.
"Members of the public who are currently involved or wish to be involved in partnerships on beautification of such areas are invited to apply to the office of the Director-General.
"All design specifications shall be provided by the office of the undersigned," he acknowledged.
