The wife of a man killed at a Thika Road shooting on Tuesday, June 22, has revealed details about how she missed death by a whisker.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, June 23, Susan Wangari, the wife of the slain Daniel Gucoma, revealed that her life was saved by a matatu's mechanical problem as well as Thika Road traffic jam.

Wangari disclosed that she had received a phone call from her husband at around 2:29 p.m. asking her to deliver some documents to him to facilitate a car deal he was to make that afternoon.

She then boarded a matatu with the aim of getting the documents to him at Gwa Kairu, Ruiru along Thika road.

Wangari boarded a matatu but encountered a heavy traffic jam along the busy route and her husband was growing impatient with her lateness.

He made a frantic last call to her at 2:56 p.m. asking for her whereabouts and due to his impatience, he asked her to send the documents to him via Whatsapp so he could proceed to Thika to close the deal.

Unbeknown to him, Wangari was just a kilometer away from the scene of the crime.

As her matatu neared the intersection of the superhighway and Eastern-Northern bypass where they were to meet, the matatu broke down and they had to be transferred to another matatu from which they were to complete the journey.

"He felt he could not wait for me any longer as he was getting late for the business in Thika. We agreed that I should share details of the vehicle he wanted to sell and the TIMS account details via Whatsapp.

"As we were being transferred to another public service vehicle a few minutes past 3p.m.. I got a call from my friend, informing me that my husband had been involved in an accident at Gwa Kairu area near Spur Mall," she stated.

She later boarded another vehicle and rushed to the scene of the accident.

"I boarded another vehicle to the scene only to find he had been moved to Thika Level 5 Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival," she added.

Gucoma, who was aged 35 and was driving a Subaru Forester when his vehicle was sprayed with bullets. It was revealed that a three-man gang sprayed 24 bullets on the vehicle.

An earlier report indicated that the motorist had two ongoing criminal cases, one in a Machakos court and the other in Nakuru.

The file in Machakos showed that it was a robbery with violence case. Experts suspect that the shooting was planned since nothing was stolen.
