Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha on Monday, July 19, announced that a university named after President Uhuru Kenyatta's mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta, was ready to begin operations.
CS Magoha announced that Mama Ngina University based in Gatundu South Sub-county, would officially begin its operations from September this year.
The institution, which is a constituent college of Kenyatta University (KU), will admit 90 students in its debut academic year.
Mama Ngina University will offer three programs that are in line with KU academic system. The programs include information Communication and Technology (ICT), Environmental studies, and Hospitality.
CS Magoha speaking over the weekend at the Mutomo Primary school which is adjacent to the institution lauded the university for the steps it had taken to complete its construction.
He devoted his efforts to ensure that the school meets all the required standards by the Ministry of Education.
“We have decided that come the new academic year in September, the university should have students. From what we have established, it is ready for new admissions. We hope it will get the required support from KU until it is able to stand on its own,” Magoha stated.
KU Vice-Chancellor Prof Paul Wainaina on his side said that the Mama Ngina University will be run under a principal and a board of management through its academic programs and examinations will be administered by KU.
He added that the institution already had been inspected by the Commission of University Education paving way for start of admissions.
The VC claimed that in three years time, Mama Ngina University would be fully independent and will not depend on KU anymore to run some of its operations.
The institution is projected to spur development in Uhuru's backyard of Gatundu.
This is the third University to be named after a member of the Kenyatta family after KU, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture, and Technology (JKUAT).
