A police officer passed away on Friday, July 23 after he was hit and run over by a motorist in Kilifi County.
The incident occurred at Kwa-Kaoge, along Malindi-Lamu road at around 9 pm, one hour to curfew.
Police constable Matrix Mtawali Kazungu was riding a motorcycle when he encountered his death.
The Anti-Stock Theft Unit officer from Laikipia was off duty when an unknown driver in an unidentified motor vehicle knocked him down, drove over him and sped away.
"The officer was riding from Lamu towards Malindi and the said driver was also heading the same direction.
"On reaching the accident scene, he was hit and ran over by the said vehicle from behind and died on the spot," a police report filed at Marereni Police Station in Magarini Sub-County read.
His colleagues who were informed of the tragedy rushed to the scene, processed it and interrogated eyewitnesses.
They also ferried his body to a nearby morgue pending autopsy.
A manhunt was launched for the driver, according to detectives on the ground.
The accident happened two days after a traffic police officer was run over by a lorry at Soko Mjinga along the Nakuru Nairobi Highway, on Wednesday, July 21.
The lorry driver knocked down the officer and also rammed into a Molo Line minibus, injuring a number of passengers on board.
"I believe the driver did not see the cop who was directing traffic at the roadblock. He lost control and veered off the road," the Molo Line driver told Kenyans.co.ke.
