Tourism Cabinet Secretary, Najib Balala, has issued a raft of new directives to bars and hotels across the country.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, August 3, the CS sounded a warning to players in the hospitality industry against breaking the Covid-19 rules.
He warned that they risked losing their one-year license if they disregarded the rules issued by the Ministry of Health aimed at curbing the spread of the highly contagious disease.
Balala further directed that all eateries must ensure all customers put on face masks and must observed the one-meter social distance.
"Despite of double vaccines, we must wear masks and keep social distance. Our position after the emergency meeting of Cabinet on Covid-19, we are very clear that every sector needs to be on the forefront. Enforcement is the key," stated Balala.
"Enforcement must be done by the industry itself. We have agreed there will be self-regulating. We will have an enforcement team led by Tourism Regulatory Authority."
He further noted that the state had introduced a list of shame programme in order to discourage consumers from frequenting the joints that break the Covid-19 protocols.
"We have agreed, and especially for pubs and bars which break the law, we shall shame them so that people do not destroy the sector. We will take action on those individuals. Even their licenses will be cancelled for one year," he added.
He, however, congratulated the hospitality industry for being compliant in enforcing the Covid-19 rules noting that guests, some from abroad, praised the Ministry for enforcement.
During his address on Friday, July 30, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe announced an extension to the national curfew to the national dusk to dawn curfew until further notice.
The Health Ministry has warned that the deadly Indian variant of Covid-19 is on a steady rise in the country and does not spare vaccinated individuals.
