An old man escaped a suspected kidnapping ordeal in Murang'a County after the car he had been held hostage in got involved in an accident.
Thomas Mwanga, the 100-year-old, was on his way to a local police station on August 10 to report one of his grandsons, who had threatened to drop out of school.
Midway, he was offered a lift by a man and woman whom he claims attempted to extort and kidnap him.
"They took a different direction from where I was going and a scuffle ensued, with the woman trying to restrain me," the old man said.
Mwanga says the vehicle diverted to the neighbouring Maragua town, with his captors demanding that he goes with them to a local bank branch to withdraw money for them.
While wrestling his captors, the car veered off the road and landed into a ditch.
Locals rushed to the scene to rescue them, only for the old man to reveal that the duo had attempted to kidnap him.
Sub-county police commander, Alexander Lusala, confirmed the incident, saying that the two suspects are currently in police custody, waiting to be processed and arraigned in court.
"The two suspects are in custody at Maragua Police station, and will be prosecuted after processing," said the police commander.
