Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) on Tuesday, December 27 foiled an attempted robbery in Makadara estate, Nairobi county.

In a statement by the DCI, the armed gang of three was on a robbery mission just minutes to midnight when the detectives intervened before a fierce shootout ensued.

The detectives shot and killed one of the thugs while two others managed to flee and vanish into the Marigui-ni slums with gunshot wounds.

According to the statement from the DCI, the detectives were acting on a tip-off from the members of the public about the group of gangsters who were terrorizing pedestrians along Mariakani road.

The undercover detectives engaged the armed gangsters after they defied orders to surrender.

Following the incident, the detectives recovered a homemade firearm with two live rounds of 9mm calibre.

In addition to that, the detectives recovered a communication gadget resembling a police walkie-talkie that the thugs were using from the slain gangster.

“The scene of the incident was documented by detectives based at the Forensic Crime Scene Investigations unit while the body was removed to a city morgue awaiting autopsy,” read part of the DCI statement.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the two fugitives who fled and are calling on the members of the public to provide any information that will lead to their arrest.

Cases of armed robberies have been on the rise within the city with the government cracking the whip on the criminals.

Elsewhere, on December 22, DCI detectives ambushed and arrested a three-man machete-wielding gang after they were cornered and fled into a church in Mathare, Nairobi county.

Reports indicated that the gang had attacked a woman along Muratina road in the area.
