Azimio on Tuesday, March 21, clarified a letter purported to have been sent by the coalition as a thank-you note to Royal Media Services' Chairman SK Macharia.

On Tuesday, a letter bearing Azimio la Umoja’s letterhead and identity features surfaced with a message thanking the RMS for providing "uninterrupted coverage" during Monday’s mass action protest.

The letter, which was purported to be signed by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, went on to request another opportunity for the media house to cover Azimio's planned protests on Monday, March 27.

The letter was allegedly written on Monday, March 20, shortly after the end of mass action.

However, the coalition distanced itself from the letter and flagged it as fake. The coalition did not, divulge its course of action on the author of the letter.

“I write to register my sincere acknowledgement and appreciation of your support during today's peaceful demos try to defend our democracy.

Citizen Television did an outstanding and starting job to show Kenya and the world the determination of Kenyans to defend their democracy and reclaim our stolen victory in last year's election," the fake letter read.

The author of the letter was yet to be established by the time of publishing this articles.

On Monday, March 20, various media houses deployed their crews to provide coverage for the mass protests which lasted for the better part of the day in Nairobi and Kisumu.

Several journalists were, in some instances caught up in the exchange between the police and the protestors.

The statement came on the back of a sustained onslaught on the media by the political class. Politicians have in the past aired their reservations about what they called unfair coverage during and after the election period.

On March 6, Kericho Senator and the Leader of the Majority in the Senate, Aaron Cheruyoit, sparked mixed reactions after he urged President William Ruto to censure the media on its coverage of various topics.

ODM leader also called on his supporters to boycott products of a popular media house in Kenya.

This even as various players in the media industry maintain that the independence of the media was under attack by politicians who were unsatisfied with coverage.

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) termed Raila's boycott call as an effort to manipulate public opinion.
