Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Wednesday, March 27, announced that Kenya would be opening a new embassy in Budapest, Hungary.
Musalia while speaking during a press conference on Kenya - Hungary Bilateral Relations in Nairobi, Kenya, revealed that this was due to high-profile visits to the country by top Hungarian government officials.
He stated that during the visits, Kenya was able to develop a mutual friendship necessitating the embassy.
“Kenya and Hungary share a strong bond of friendship evidenced by the exchange of a number of high-level meetings between our countries,” he explained.
In particular, he pointed out Hungarian President János Áder's visit to Kenya in 2022 for a four-day working visit.
At the time, Alder set history by undertaking the longest visit by a European Head of State to an African nation.
According to Musalia, the ties made during the high-profile visit were further strengthened by Hungarian Parliament Speaker Laszlo Kover in March 2023.
Kover who visited the country for parliamentary diplomacy talks also set history by being the first-ever Hungarian Speaker to visit Kenya in an official capacity.
The Speaker was welcomed to Kenya by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula and went ahead to spend a week in Kenya.
During a later meeting with President William Ruto, Kover was told that Kenya would consider setting up the embassy to help solidify the relations between the two countries
Last week, Kenya also played host to Hungarian Minister for Agriculture Istvan Nagye who launched development projects in Kirinyaga County.
“It is in this spirit that Kenya is keen to open an Embassy in Budapest to further strengthen this good relationship,” Mudavadi announced.
Kenya already hosts the Embassy of The Republic of Hungary located at Kilimani Kabarsiran Avenue, Nairobi.
