Ruto Announces Three Days of Mourning as CDF Francis Ogolla Dies

President William Ruto has announced a three-day mourning period over the death of CDF Francis Ogolla who passed away on Thursday, April 18. 

Speaking at the State House in Nairobi, Ruto noted that the mourning commences Friday, April 19 to Sunday, April 21, 2024. 

“During this time of national mourning, the Kenya Flag, the Kenya Defences Flag, the East African Community Flag and Flags of all formations of the military shall fly at half mast,” Ruto stated. 

The head of state mourning the General, highlighted moments before he appointed him as the Chief of Defence Forces, citing his commitment in previous roles.

"This is a moment of great sadness for myself, as the Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, the Kenya Defence Forces fraternity and the nation at large," Ruto stated.

Ruto further offered his condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers, wishing a quick recovery to two more soldiers currently receiving treatment at the hospital. 

The accident, which happened around 2:20 pm had eleven occupants in the aircraft, where nine died among them the General, and two were left with major injuries. 

Ogolla and his were in West Pokot for a peacekeeping mission following President William Ruto's orders on the deployment of KDF to the area.

"The CDF, on board the Kenya Airforce had left Nairobi this morning to visit troops deployed in the North Rift and to also inspect the ongoing renovation in schools," Ruto explained. 

Condolence Messages

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta paid his tribute, terming him as a patriotic person," "The CDF was not only an accomplished military leader but also a devoted patriot who dedicated his life to serving and protecting our beloved country."

Tanzania President Samia Suluhu on her part, " I send my condolences to President William Ruto and the Citizens of the United Republic of Kenya, families affected, friends and relatives. Poleni sana."

First Lady Rachel Ruto quoted  Psalm 34:18 to comfort the country during this mourning period,"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
