Activist Claims Harassment by Police during Arrest

Activist Boniface Mwangi was on Wednesday arrested for his alleged involvement in the boda boda demos that brought the CBD area in Nairobi to a standstill.

The Star reports that Mwangi was arrested for obstruction, causing chaos, mobilizing boda boda riders to demonstrate in town and engaging city county askaris in running battles.

The riders took to the streets yesterday to protest alleged harassment by city council askaris.

The protests caused a major traffic snarl up in the City center for the better part of the afternoon.

Mwangi took to Facebook to explain to his fans what had happened, leading up to his arrest.

He claims that he had gone to City Hall offices to inquire about his friend’s impounded motorbike when an argument between an Administration police officer and him ensued.

The officer allegedly tried to deny him entry.

Whilst trying to record the conversation on his phone, the officer tried to snatch it away and started assaulting him.

He says he was dragged to the City Hall basement cells where he was beaten and harassed. He was finally handed over to police officers.

He was released on a Sh 50,000 bond and will be arraigned in court on Tuesday, 14th July to answer to charges of creating disturbance and resisting arrest.

Mwangi has in the past been arrested while protesting and has on more than one occasion complained of harassment at the hands of police.

Here is his account of the events
