After Britain's Vote, IEBC Put in Tight Spot

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has sought to exonerate itself from any blame after being pressed hard following the United Kingdom's (UK) quick tallying of votes.

The electoral body sought to explain the difference between the last General Election and Britain's referendum which was carried out on Thursday.

In the last Kenyan elections, around 12 Million voters cast their ballots whose tallying took close to a week to complete. On the other hand, UK's referendum to decide on whether to exit the European Union involved more than 33 Million voters and the counting was done within one night.

Following the speedy tallying, the IEBC was trolled by Kenyans on social media questioning why there was such a huge difference in the handling of the two polls.

The IEBC answered its critics saying: “The delivery of UK Referendum and our general election is not about similarities.”

The electoral body clarified that there was a variance between the number of positions voted for in the two exercises, therefore, delivery of the results should not be compared.

“Referendum is less demanding. One ballot of YES/NO. The last general election had 1,882 positions attracting a total of 12,776 candidates,” stated the electoral body.

On Thursday, Millions of UK citizens participated in the polls which were completed within the day.

The official results indicating that the UK had resolved to leave the EU were announced by Friday morning despite the high number of vote.
