Chief’s House Torched by Illicit Brewers

An assistant chief in Kirinyaga County narrowly escaped death after his house was burnt down on Thursday night.

The arsonists are said to be illicit brewers who were angry at the Ngiroche sub-location assistant chief for cracking down on illicit brews in the area

Stevenson Njogu says he had been received threats before the incident.

He expressed fears to Citizen Digital that something worse could end up happening to him or his family.

He urged the government to arm chiefs to enable them protect themselves from such incidents.

Chiefs and assistant chiefs had been put on the spot over the indulgence of illicit brew in their jurisdiction.

They had been criticized for slacking in the fight against illicit liquor that had on more than one occasion led to the deaths of several people.

The ongoing crackdown came after President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a directive ordering that the illicit alcohol be destroyed.
