Church to Fight CORD Over Uhuru Park

Members of the Prayers Beyond Boundaries Ministries have asserted that they are ready to take on the CORD Coalition over the Uhuru Park venue where both factions intend to hold separate events.

The Prayers Beyond Boundaries Ministries has insisted that it booked the grounds before the Opposition scheduled its event on the same grounds.

On Sunday, the church ministry asked CORD leaders to respect it adding that it had directed a lawyer to write to the County Government seeking clarity on the matter.

The church leaders asserted that they would proceed to the park come June 1 as they had already paid the Nairobi County Government for the venue.

Led by Kiharu Member of Parliament Irungu Kangata, the ministries further noted that CORD should cancel its Wednesday rally.

“We are more than ready for us to attend that prayer meeting. We know that Evangelist Lucy Wa Ngunjiri has booked days before ODM and CORD booked their event on that venue. So it is for CORD to cancel their event but for us we shall move [sic],” Mr Kangata stated.

According to the ministries, it had booked Uhuru Park for four days from May 31 to June 3 and the County had already granted them permission.

On Saturday, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero rubbished claims by the police that the Church had booked Uhuru Park until June 1, therefore blocking CORD from holding its Madaraka Day rally at the venue.

In a statement, Kidero stated that the Opposition had already been authorised by the Nairobi County Government to proceed with their meeting at Uhuru Park, adding that the whole issue had been politicised.

“The Nairobi City County Government, the trustees and custodians of Uhuru Park, are not interested in any confusion or politics of grandstanding,” Kidero stated.

CORD's parallel rally has immensely been opposed from Jubilee leaders who have stated that it was unconstitutional for the Opposition to hold a parallel meeting to that of the President during the national day.

However, Raila Odinga has insisted that they will proceed with their plan.
