CORD Suspends Anti-IEBC Protests

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has suspended its weekly demonstrations against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to allow for dialogue.

Speaking on Wednesday, Siaya Senator James Orengo and his Machakos counterpart Johnson Muthama indicated that the Opposition had given the government until June 5 to respond to the dialogue calls.

The coalition added that if the government failed to positively respond to its appeal for structured dialogue, the protests would resume every Monday as witnessed in the last four weeks.

According to the Senators, the coalition had already composed a team to spearhead the talks and would use next week to seek for peace and justice as well as condole with families who lost loved ones during the protests.

The coalition further denied speculations that the demonstrations were an attempt to overthrow the ruling government.

Different stakeholders have condemned both the protesters and police officers for violent exchange witnessed on Monday that left four people dead with several others injured including more than 28 security agents.

On Tuesday, 11 ambassadors led by United States envoy Rober Godec expressed concern over the protests calling on leaders across both political divides to dialogue concerning IEBC stalemate.
