Disabled Kenyan Doctor Fights with Pilot

Fly540 has objected claims that one of its pilots denied a disabled doctor access to a plane that was en route to Nairobi from Eldoret.

Dr Agnes Nyaga had claimed on a national daily that the airline's pilot stopped her from boarding the plane as she took too long climbing the stairs leading to the aircraft.

“I begged him to let people help me up the stairs.....Some four strong men had already volunteered to carry me up the stairs but he would hear none of it,” Dr Nyaga was quoted by the Nation.

Kenyans.co.ke sought to get Fly540's response to the claims and after making several calls the airline responded with a statement.

In the press release, the airline expressed that Ms Nyaga had refused help offered by its staff and had abused the pilot.

"After 15 minutes she still had not climbed the stairs even after many offers of assistance by the Fly540 staff," read the statement in part.

"At that point our pilot – a gentle individual – came out of the cockpit and tried to help and offered assistance. The good doctor abused our pilot and strongly pushed him away," added the airline.

However, according to Ms Nyaga, she broke down after being humilitated by the pilot who firmly told her that he had the right not let her board the aircraft.

"I have decided that you are not boarding the aircraft back to Nairobi," the captain added ordering strong men to return her to the lounge.

The paediatrician, who had attended a medical workshop in Eldoret, reportedly spent the night at the departure lounge only to leave the following day in a different plane.

This is the second time Fly 540 is finding itself on the receiving end of discrimination allegations, as two years ago Bishop Jackson Kosgei, chairman of the Kenya Film Classification Board, was reportedly forced to crawl out of an aircraft after the staff declined helping him disembark.

The airline affirmed on Tuesday that it was seeking legal redress on the matter as it took care of Dr. Nyaga and even booked her another flight with a different airline. According to the company's statement, Ms Nyaga's behaviour remained a mystery as she declined help from them.
