Drivers Die Escaping Alcoblow

Three people perished on Friday night after the vehicles they were travelling in were involved in separate fatal accidents as they attempted to escape the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) officials.

The two incidents, which were captured on camera at two different locations along the Thika Superhighway, happened as the drivers were trying to escape the roadblocks erected to nab those driving under the influence of alcohol.

In one of the accidents, a private motorist and a taxi operator got into a head on collision after the private car driver resorted to escaping through the wrong side of the road.

The driver, however, survived the fatal crash but the taxi operator succumbed to injuries on the spot.

Two other people lost their lives a few minutes in a similar incident of driving into oncoming traffic while evading arrest by the 'alcoblow officers'.

The vehicle they were travelling in had earlier been captured on camera making a u-turn at the middle of the road then getting into the opposite side of the road upon spotting NTSA officers ahead.

According to Hared Adan, a Safety Enforcement officer with the regulatory authority, more than 50 per cent of fatal accidents occur during the weekends with Friday night and Monday morning being the most affected.

A report released by NTSA in 2015 revealed how the Superhighway was one of the most dangerous roads to use in Nairobi, with private motorists accounting for the highest number of fatalities recorded within the City.
