Governor's Wife Loses Sh4.8 Million

Two suspects - a man and a woman - have been arraigned in court for allegedly conning Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria's wife Sh4.8 Million in a fraudulent land deal.

The two are said to have sold a 5-acre piece of land to the Governor's wife using forged documents. The suspects had allegedly obtained a fake title deed showing that the rightful owner of the land had sold the land to one of them.

All hell broke loose when the legal owner of the land Samwel Magaga emerged after discovering that Wa Iria's wife was sinking a dam on his land.

The suspects, Lucy Thiong'o and Joseph Ngugi were arrested and charged in the Murang'a law courts where they denied charges and were released on a Sh1.5 million cash bail each.

This comes in the backdrop of a Presidential directive barring the registration of all land-buying companies until Members of Parliament pass a law to monitor such entities.

Land-centred wrangles have been prevalent in Murang'a County, a trend that caught President Uhuru Kenyatta's attention after it turned to be a bloody affair.

Mysterious killings of eight directors of the controversial Kihiu Mwiri land buying company, over wrangles in land allocation to shareholders have since been reported.

Cases of buyers being duped to purchase non-existent property are reportedly on the rise in Kenya with about7000 cases of fraud registered in court.
