A GSU officer shot himself using his official weapon in Kapedo, Baringo County.
The officer was among security officers at a security camp, deployed along the border of Baringo and Turkana counties.
The officers were charged in disarming bandits and cattle rustlers in the volatile North Rift region.
They were deployed in the region last year after suspected Pokot bandits ambushed security officers at Kasarani area near Kapedo trading centre killing 21 officers.
According to The Standard, Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Osman Warfa said initial investigations revealed that the officer was mentally disturbed at the time of incident.
He added that indepth investigations were being done to determine exactly what drove him to suicide.
Early in May this year, some of the officers raised concerns over their working conditions.
They claimed that they were going days without food or water.
Inadequate food rations, poor working conditions and lack of co-operation from their superiors were their main complaints.
It is however unclear if any of those reasons led to the officer's suicide.
