ICC Prosecutor Speaks Out on What Kenyatta's Presidency Did to Her Case

International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has spoken out on what President Uhuru Kenyatta's presidency did to her case.

According to Bensouda the rise of Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto to the country's top office had a huge impact on her case against the duo.

Bensouda has said that after President Kenyatta ascended to power witnesses refused to testify while the government stopped cooperating with the International Criminal Court.

The ICC prosecutor was speaking during the reflection on the collapse of the case against Uhuru in a documentary titled 'Kenya: A Guidebook to Impunity' hosted by human rights activist Maina Kiai, The Star reports.

She further notes that circumstances changed and witnesses found themselves in situations where they had to give evidence against their own President and Deputy President.

In the documentary posted online, Bensouda says her office had fulfilled its mandate but Uhuru and his allies intimidated and bribed witnesses.

Bensouda says she had anticipated witnesses in the Kenyan cases would be intimidated but was surprised by the high level with which it occurred.

When dropping President Kenyatta's case in December 2014, Bensouda accused the Kenyan government of failing to cooperate with her office in her quest for evidence.

The case against Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang is still on.
