IEBC Boss Agrees to Leave Office But on This Condition

IEBC Chairman Issack Hassan has said that his commissioners are willing to leave office but would only do so after a political dialogue and whose agreement will then be made law.

Hassan expressed on Wednesday that the commissioners were alive to the growing political tension, but a political dialogue on the electoral body was needed, after which the resolutions should be enacted.

"The current debate on whether IEBC should go is a matter not in our hands; it requires political dialogue for those outside the commission and if there's any agreement reached, it should be taken to Parliament," said Hassan after the commission's meeting with religious leaders.

According to the IEBC boss, if a political agreement was not reached regarding the commission, then those seeking their ouster must follow the constitutionally stipulated procedure of a tribunal.

The chairman of the electoral body further stated that IEBC was ready to engage any stakeholders on electoral matters, adding that the solution to the current stalemate did not lie in demonstrations.

Hassan reiterated his stance that his team would not resign from office as that would amount to an abdication of their constitutionally-handed down mandate.

"The commissioners hold their offices by virtue of the Constitution and we will continue to discharge our duties. We will not resign because this will amount to abdicating our responsibilities," he said as quoted by the Standard.

IEBC continues to face pressure from various quarters including the Opposition and religious leaders who are calling for change in its constitution.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has vowed to continue leading protests in a bid to have the current IEBC commissioners removed from office and the body re-constituted.
