Jubilee, KANU Supporters Clash In Kericho

Chaos erupted in Kericho County after KANU and Jubilee Coalition supporters clashed over a venue where both planned to convene their rallies.

The two groups fought over Moi Gardens where they both claimed to have received permission to use the gounds for their final campaign rallies ahead of  Monday's Senatorial by-election.

Police officers were forced to lob teargas canisters to disperse the warring factions, which stood their grounds vowing not to leave the venue.

According a letter written to Kericho Police Station boss by KANU Secretary General Nick Salat, the party had informed the authorities of its intention to use the grounds.

However, Jubilee leaders also planned to use the same venue leading to a confrontation which prompted security officers to seal off the area.

The meetings were to serve as the final platform for KANU's Paul Sang and Jubilee's Aaron Cheruiyot to address their supporters being the last day of campaigns as per the election regulations.

The Kericho by election is a big test for the Jubilee coalition, as it seeks to stamp its authority in the region despite facing rebellion from some powerful area politicians.

Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto, Nandi Hills lawmaker Alfred Keter and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi have been on the forefront supporting the KANU candidate, even though they are part of the ruling coalition.
