At least 13 Shot in CORD Protests

At least 13 people were reportedly shot by police officers during CORD's countrywide protests against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Monday.

Five people were allegedly shot by prison warders in Migori during the demonstrations. Police boss David Kirui confirmed the incident stating that the five were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

In Homa Bay County, two women suffered bullet injuries and were taken to hospital in a police vehicle.

At the same time in Kisumu, three protesters got hit when the demonstrations turned chaotic with one succumbing to head injuries at the Aga Khan Hospital.

The wave of shootings was also experienced in Siaya County where two people reportedly died from bullets amid the violent protests.

One of the protesters died upon arrival at the Siaya County Referral Hospital where he was rushed with a bullet lodged in his chest while the other died at the scene of the demonstrations.

Back in the Capital, Nairobi, a 24-year old man identified as Shaban Abdulahi was shot in Kibera as CORD supporters converged at Kamukunji grounds to prepare for a march to the city centre.

Abdulahi was taken to the Nairobi Women's Hospital for treatment.

More people could be nursing gunshot wounds as police presumably used excessive force while dispersing the protesters.

CORD leaders heavily criticised the response by the anti-riot police to quell the demonstrations, stating that the '2007 shoot and kill order still existed'.

"Police have violently killed our people in what was peaceful demonstrations across the country. This is unlawful," CORD leader Raila Odinga said.
