Man In Court For Threatening and Calling MP Prostitute

A man was charged at a Runyenjes Court in Embu County with three counts of insulting and threatening to rape and murder a female Member of Parliament.

Erasto Gitonga is said to have sent threatening text messages on more than one occasion to Runyenjes MP Cecily Mbarire.

The court heard that on May 30th this year, Gitonga sent threats to Mbarire via SMS at Kanja South, Runyenjes Sub County.

In one text, Gitonga is alleged to have insulted Mbarire, calling her a prostitute.

In a report, Citizen Digital quotes the text in which he labeled Mbarire “a prostitute with no any moral authority to interfere with the affairs of Embu County Governor Martin Nyaga Wambora”.

Speaking after the court session Mbarire expressed fears that her life could be in danger following the threats.

She says she has reported the matter to the appropriate authority and requested more security.

Mbarire says the threats are as a result of ongoing leadership wrangles in Embu, The Nation reports.

She added that she will not consider a plea from Gitonga's family that she forgive him, instead she says she will wait to see justice done.

Mbarire expressed concern over the increasing cases of female legislators and leaders being threatened and or insulted simply for exercising their democratic rights.

According to KBC, Gitonga denied the charges and was released on a Sh 100,000 bond with surety of a similar amount.

The case will be heard on 23rd of June 2015.
