MCAs Waste Over Sh100 Million at the Beach

Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) have been put on the spot after wasting millions of public funds for an event which most of them failed to attend.

The MCAs who had been funded by their Counties to attend a Legislative Summit in Mombasa are said to have skipped the function to enjoy the beach.

Mombasa beaches were reportedly full of activities as the ward representatives enjoyed leisure, snubbing the five-day conference.

According to budget allocations, each MCA received a daily allowance of Sh14,000 for 'attending' the ceremony which was meant to discuss the progress of devolution.

Tents set up at the Flamingo Beach Resort and Spa hotel to accommodate the conference were almost empty since most of the leaders just made technical appearances at the function which more than 40 Senators showed up.

In one of the sessions, a consultant reportedly cried foul over the low attendance yet an audience of about 2500 was expected.

“This is the ushenzi (stupidity) syndrome we are always talking about. Look how empty this place is,” he said.

The sentiments were reiterated by a Kajiado MCA who regretted how her colleagues had ignored the event she deemed helpful.

"We should not have wasted the chance. Indeed, it is sad because we were facilitated to fully participate and go home with new ideas,” she complained.
