Moi University Closed Down After Students' Riots

Moi University main campus in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu, has been closed down indefinitely.

This follows chaos and heavy tension among students in the campus, ahead of student leaders elections, Classic 105 reports.

According to Citizen News, the close down order was given by the University’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Richard Mibey on behalf of the Senate.

The unrest is said to have started off as clashes between rival groups with each protesting in support of their own candidate.

The protests would lead to destruction of property and violence which forced the school's administration to send students home as an emergency measure.

Tension remained high as police officers were deployed to the grounds and students given a notice to leave the campus, The Nation reports.

This is not the first time that students in universities have taken campus politics too far resulting in violence.

Often serving as a reflection of highly polarized national politics, students unrest during campaign and election periods have led to destruction of property and casualties in some cases.
