MP Rejects CORD's Nomination For IEBC Talks

One of the Members of Parliament (MP) nominated to represent the CORD coalition in talks on reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has declined to take up the role.

Mogotio MP Hellen Sambili has dismissed the appointment stating that she was not informed of plans to represent the Coalition in the talks.

The lawmaker expressed disappointment disclosing that she received information of her inclusion in the Joint Select Committee through the media adding that she was never consulted.

“I was elected by the people of Mogotio on a KANU ticket and my appointment into the Joint Select Committee by CORD is puzzling,” she asserted.

The former Sports Minister said that she was not sure why she was included in the list since KANU had not officially joined the Opposition.

“If indeed KANU has moved from Jubilee into CORD, then it is upon the party chair to make that announcement, after which I will consult on whether to take up the position or not,” she added.

On Wednesday, CORD announced that it had selected Senators Mutula Kilonzo (Makueni) and James Orengo (Siaya), Johnson Muthama (Machakos), MPs Eseli Simiyu (Tongaren), Sambili, Junet Mohamed (Suna East) and Mombasa Women Representative Mishi Mboko to engage their Jubilee counterpart in the talks.

The 14-member Committee from both coalitions is expected to spearhead discussions to resolve a stalemate regarding electoral reforms in the country.
