PHOTOS: 5 Die as Tree Falls on Matatu

Five people were killed on Wednesday evening after a tree fell on a matatu along the busy Waiyaki highway in Nairobi.

The tragic incident, that occurred near Kianda School in Kangemi, claimed the lives of four passengers and a cyclist, injuring several others.

According to Nairobi Police Commander Japheth Koome, the accident was caused by an old tree that had grown weak over time.

“The accident which occurred at 6.30pm was caused by the huge tree which was aged and whose roots had become weak,” answered Koome.

The evening incident caused a huge traffic snarl up before the police cleared the road.

The injured victims are reportedly receiving treatment at Kikuyu hospital, were rushed.

Cases of road carnage have been on the rise with more than ten people losing their lives in separate accidents in a period of one week.

This week, four people were killed in Nakuru and several others injured, while in Kirinyaga, a teacher and another passenger died as 14 others suffered serious injuries after a matatu they were travelling in overturned along the Kerugoya-Kutus road.
