Police Now Want Public Help in Jacob Juma's Death Probe

Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro on Friday advised the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution to open a public inquest into the death of businessman Jacob Juma.

The move, which usually follows lack of sufficient evidence to sustain a prosecution, comes even after police probed several witnesses linked to the brutal murder of the Jubilee critic.

A lawyer speaking to Kenyans.co.ke divulged that 'police are allowed to carry out public inquests in mysterious murders which are of public interest to allow citizens help in collecting evidence'.

DPP Keriako Tobiko, however, noted that his office would review the file before making a decision on the next course of action.

The details come two days after CORD leader Raila Odinga complained about the slow pace at which the DCI was probing Juma's murder.

“You remember the Inspector-General of Police told us that they had found the gun that was used in the murder, since that time, nothing has really happened. It took the police quite a long time for them to record statements from Juma’s family,” Odinga stated.

Juma's case is seen to be taking the same turn as that of the late Internal Security Minister George Saitoti, who died in a helicopter crash.

After the tragic death of Mr Saitoti in 2012, a public inquest was recommended to seek more evidence in the crash after claims suggested that it could have been a planned attack.

The plane accident killed Prof Saitoti, his assistant Orwa Ojode, their bodyguards Joshua Tonkei and Thomas Murimi as well as pilots Captain Nancy Gituanja and Captain Luke Oyugi.

The commission of inquiry, which was led by retired Deputy Chief Justice Kalpana Rawal, concluded that bad weather, inexperience by the pilots to fly in the adverse conditions, excess weight and poor safety standards by the Kenya Police Air Wing were the combined factors that caused the crash.

Juma was shot dead by unknown people on 5 May, 2016, as he was driving to his Karen home at around 9.30pm.
