Police Officer Killed Inside Nairobi Matatu

An Administration Police officer on Sunday morning succumbed to injuries after being shot inside a matatu he was travelling in along Juja road, Nairobi.

Sergeant Abdiaziz Hussein, who was heading home from the Eastleigh Airbase Chief Camp where he was stationed, was shot three times.

The officer boarded the matatu unaware that the vehicle had been carjacked from the City. On nearing a total petrol station located along the road, the thugs who were ransacking passengers noticed that he was a serviceman.

"He had finished his duty and was leaving for his house in Eastleigh when he boarded the matatu that had apparently been carjacked from Kariokor," the authorities were quoted by a local daily.

A passenger claimed that Hussein, who was unarmed, had a jacket concealing his uniform but the gangsters realised he was an officer while ransacking him.

The gunmen are said to have responded by spraying him with bullets causing a commotion inside the matatu.

“They had robbed other passengers and on reaching where the officer was, they realized he is a police officer and shot him three times before escaping on foot,” a passenger in the matatu revealed.

"There was a lot of noise followed by gunshots and when I stopped I realized Hussein had been shot and the gunmen had escaped on foot," reiterated the vehicle's driver.

Nairobi police commandant Japheth Koome confirmed the shooting adding that the gang escaped on foot but no arrests had been made.
