Pope Pardons Abortion as Government Launches Safe Abortion Programme

Pope Francis has urged all priests across the globe to pardon women who have committed the sin of abortion.

The Pope, however, gave the leeway only during the Jubilee year which begins in December. He sympathized with women who have had to abort because of external pressure saying they were living in guilt.

On Wednesday, the Government of Kenya also took a leap to embrace the controversial issue by launching the National Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Policy 2015 (ASRHP).

Cabinet Secretary for Health James Macharia officially launched the initiative aimed at fostering reproductive and sexuality education in schools.

The program is a project by the Ministry of Health targeting teenagers, mothers and newborns.

Donors are expected to spend Sh40 Billion annually for five years to ensure a successful breakthrough of the project.

The policy however does not negate the constitution, which states that abortion can only be procured by a licensed medical practitioner when the life of the woman is at risk.

Reports indicate that there are about 300,000 cases of abortion conducted annually and 3000 women losing their lives in the process.

The Kenyan clergy are yet to give their consent with regards to the government's planned project in schools.
