Postmortem Reveals Real Cause of Kisumu 'Protester's' Death

A postmortem report has revealed what caused the death of a Kisumu man who was injured during Monday's demonstrations against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

The Aga Khan Hospital and police had initially indicated that Fredrick Otieno died after falling down while running during the protests, but not from bullet wounds as earlier claimed.

However, a postmortem conducted at the health facility in the presence of journalists, family members and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) revealed that Otieno suffered a gunshot.

The report said Otieno, who was heading to a bank at Tivoli Centre, was shot in the left arm next to the armpit with the bullet penetrating his lungs.

The police and Aga Khan Hospital Superintendent Sam Oula on Monday maintained that the deceased had no bullet wounds when he was admitted to the facility.

"On the fateful Monday, Oula said, we received three victims across the day. One was brought in dead at about 11:30 am (Otieno). He fell during the 'running battles' and did not wake up. Witnesses reported that he knocked his head. He did not have any gunshot injury on him,” Oula is quoted by the Star

On the material day, images of a seriously injured Otieno were widely circulated on social media showing paramedics fighting to save his life.

During the protests organised by the Opposition, three other people died in Siaya and Kisumu with an unknown number of civilians sustaining injuries.

29 anti-riots police officers were also injured in the melee with 11 of them being airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment.
