President Uhuru Kenyatta Challenges Uganda's Parliament on Democracy

President Uhuru Kenyatta has challenged Uganda on the need to observe democratic rights and the rule of law.

While addressing Uganda’s parliament today, President Kenyatta urged the regional opposition and civil society not to abuse democratic rights.

"We cant have leaders exploiting democratic freedoms" Kenyatta said.

He observed that democracy is not alien to the East African community, saying the values of accountability and transparency have been values of the African people.

Kenyatta further highlighted that the opposition should not exploit democratic freedoms to de-legitimize governments and undermine the people's will.

Uganda has been on the spot over what is seen to be gagging of opposition leaders who attempt to challenge President Yoweri Museveni’s long-entrenched leadership.

Last month police in Uganda arrested two prominent political leaders -former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi and Kizza Besigye.

In his speech to Uganda's parliament, Kenyatta has also highlighted the importance of regional security as well as nurturing of the potential in the youth.

"Our young people are our greatest resource and entrepreneurs that we have," he said.

President Kenyatta has been in Uganda since Saturday, for a three day State visit.

On Saturday he held bi-lateral talks with President Museveni.
