Raila Gives New Formula for Choosing IEBC Commissioners

CORD leader Raila Odinga has proposed a new method that should be used in picking commissioners for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Odinga stated that political parties should be tasked with selecting IEBC commissioners in order to solve the stalemate facing the electoral body.

According to Mr Odinga, the current Commission should be reconstituted with parties being allowed to propose the officials in accordance with their might in Parliament.

That would mean that parties with higher representation in both the National Assembly and Senate would choose more Commissioners.

The former Prime Minister has also advised that civil groups should be represented by being permitted to select a few nominees.

“The best way is for political parties to propose representation in the electoral body proportionate to their strength and then civil societies should also propose some people,” he stated.

The Opposition leader asserted that it was a practice that had been used to form credible bodies in countries such as Mozambique, Mexico and others urging the country to adapt the same.

CORD coalition has relentlessly been pushing for the disbandment of IEBC with the call being reiterated by the Law Society of Kenya and National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK).

Efforts by the coalition to forcefully eject the Commissioners were thwarted after members and supporters were teargassed as they tried to break down a gate attempting to access the electoral body's offices.

However, CORD leaders insisted that they would return at the offices on May 2 calling on their supporters to camp outside IEBC premises in the whole country.

They described Monday of next week as a National 'Day of Rage' assuring that they would be camping at the IEBC's offices every other Monday until the Commission was disbanded.
