Raila Loses Popularity After Anti-IEBC Demos

Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leader Raila Odinga has slightly lost support for the 2017 General Election.

Odinga's popularity has decreased to 28 percent from 29 percent according to a new survey by Ipsos after the period the Opposition staged weekly demonstrations advocating for electoral reforms.

On the other hand, President Uhuru Kenyatta's numbers rose to 51 percent from 40 percent recorded in a similar survey last year.

In the survey conducted between June 4 and 18, the difference between the two grew from a margin of 11 in November 2015 to 23, even after the government was bashed over the use of excessive force in handling anti-IEBC protesters.

The study shows other Presidential hopefuls Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula coming a distant third with only 2 percent of the population sampled supporting them.

Meanwhile, the pollster has indicated that the results do not conclusively relate to the outcome of next year's presidential election since the Opposition is yet to name its flag bearer.

“While it is certain that Uhuru will be Jubilee’s presidential candidate and Ruto his running mate, there remains uncertainty as to who will be CORD’s torch-bearer. As such, these numbers could change dramatically after CORD has identified its presidential ticket,” Ipsos Lead Researcher Tom Wolf.

The report comes at a time when a tussle over electoral reforms continues, with political shakeups expected before the General Election.
