REVEALED: The Crimes Kenyan Police Commit

The Kenya Police is responsible for a quarter of all crimes in the country, according to a government report released last week on Tuesday exposing the rot in the law enforcement department.

The Economic Survey 2016 report indicated that officers in uniform committed 24,647 of the total 72,490 crimes that were reported last year.

According to the survey, the men and women in uniform were mostly involved in drug trafficking, criminal damage and economic crimes, while sex scandals had gone down from 146 in 2014 to 118 cases in 2015.

“Dangerous drugs and criminal damage jointly accounted for 72.5 per cent of all reported offences in 2015,” the report said, adding that the proportion of female offenders rose to 20.7 per cent compared to 18.4 per cent in 2014.

Traffic offences accrued 14,498 or 20% of the total crimes, which signifies the menace on the roads.

Apart from accepting, seeking bribes and handling stolen property from individuals, impersonation of police officers was commonly used to steal from people.

The report further listed counties with highest crime rates as follows: Kiambu County (4768), Nakuru (4384), Nairobi (4383), Meru (4215) and Mombasa (3194).

In general the economic survey report affirms that crime hit new heights from 69,376 in 2014 to 72,490, 2015.
