Transport Authority Suspends PSV Saccos Following Accidents

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended two Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Saccos after tragic road accidents in which vehicles from the Saccos were involved.

A matatu from NNUS Sacco was involved in an accident at Mai Mahiu while one from Great Rift PSV Sacco was involved in an accident at Kipkaren.

The authority further directed that the two Saccos immediately train all their drivers.

Speaking to The Standard, Deputy Director and Head of Corporate Communications Dominic Kabiru said that the two Saccos will be given road safety presentations and other necessary information material tomorrow, Saturday in Naivasha.

The move by NTSA comes in the wake of increased fatalities on the road as a result of PSV vehicles being involved in accidents.

On Thursday, seven people died while several others were injured in an accident as Salama, along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

NTSA Director General Francis Meja asked that all PSV operators carefully vet their drivers and ensure they possess the right level of skills, training and attitude before trusting them to handle passengers.

He added that most accidents take place as a result of PSV drivers ignoring traffic rules or being careless.

NTSA has pledged to conduct an audit for all PSV Saccos to check their compliance to regulations.

The exercise is set to be carried out across the country.
