Police officers in Nairobi have arrested a gang of suspects believed to be behind a series of attacks on Uber taxi drivers in the County.
Six suspects were apprehended on Saturday morning while reportedly planning another attack after being on police radar for sometime.
Confirming the arrest, County Police Commander Japheth Koome said the six were rounded up by his officers at 2am.
“It is a notorious group but they are now in police custody. They knew we have been looking for them and have been trying to evade us but the arm of the law is long enough,” Koome declared.
The police boss added that he would not tolerate contravening of the law in the name of business rivalry, assuring that the suspects would be arraigned in court.
“They are currently in our custody as we finalise investigations but we will be presenting them in court on Tuesday to answer to charges of arson, malicious damage and murder,” he affirmed.
Two taxi vehicles have recently been torched with drivers being assaulted following rivalry in the industry, in which regular operators are accusing their Uber counterparts of spoiling business owing to their low rates.
On Wednesday, four men attacked a driver after dropping a passenger in Riruta and burnt the vehicle he was using. The driver however, escaped the ambush unharmed.
