VIDEO: Government to Award Sh100,000 to Anyone Who Reports GWD Disease

The Ministry of Health is giving out Sh100,000 to anyone who reports a case of the Guinea Worm Disease (GWD) disease.

This is in a bid to get rid of GWD in the country.

According to the Ministry, Kenya is the only country that is yet to receive a certificate of eradication in East Africa.

A campaign against GWD is set to be launched in Turkana, West Pokot and Trans Nzoia counties.

The Government aims at eradicating the disease by 2016 in order to receive the certification.

According to Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), GWD is spread by a parasite that lives in ponds and stagnant water.

Once drunk and in the system, the larvae grows up to three feet long.

When the female worm is ready to come out of the body, it creates a blister that bursts within 24-72 hours.

Submerging the body part in water eases the pain and helps the worm come out.

It then releases a milky substance into the water - eggs - and the cycle starts over again.

This disease mostly affects remote communities and the last case of this disease was in 2005 in Turkana.
